Nestled in a long valley in the coastal mountains of San Diego County, Escondido is a thriving community that offers a blend of city living and country comfort. It was founded in 1888. Its earliest industry was agriculture and the original community had a population of less than 800. The city today is home to more than 120,000 residents and is North San Diego County's largest city, featuring a diversity of business activity with an extensive retail and manufacturing base. Escondido, which means, "hidden valley" in Spanish, lies about 18 miles inland, 100 miles south of Los Angeles and 30 miles northeast of San Diego. It is a highly desirable place to live with attractive homes, numerous parks, lakes, a sports center, more than a dozen golf courses, great restaurants, wineries, shopping centers, good schools and a comprehensive healthcare system. The rolling hills provide fertile ground for the area's many avocado and citrus groves. The community is home to the California Center for the Arts. Also located nearby are the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Lawrence Welk Resort. The city itself is home to a number of parks. Residents also have easy access to more than 20 area golf courses. Students are served by the Escondido Union Elementary and Escondido Union High School districts. The Escondido real estate market is diverse and relatively affordable.
