Founded in 1888, Escondido's earliest industry was agriculture and the original community had a population of less than 800. Local attractions include the California Center for the Arts, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (formerly known as the San Diego Wild Animal Park) and the Lawrence Welk Resort. The city itself is home to a number of parks. Residents also have easy access to more than 20 area golf courses. Students are served by the Escondido Union Elementary and Escondido Union High School districts. The Escondido real estate market is diverse and relatively affordable.
